Mikleo

Mikleo felt along the spines on his nape. It was like touching jagged stone. He'd been fighting against the transformation during the course of their journey back to the city (no doubt Dezel must have been surprised by the sudden declaration at the time). While Mikleo had told Dezel about finally wanting to find help for his condition (and by proxy about Prompto's confidante, Lunafreya), he hadn't exactly been forthcoming about the draconic changes -- the hardening of the nails on his hands and feet, the snowy, scaly skin covering his back, and the occasional snagging of his fangs on his lip. Dezel might have sensed the changes in some way or another, but even if he did, it didn't beat Mikleo telling him about it as Mikleo shouldn't have to hide anything anymore.

Emerging from the treeline on the other side of the forest, Mikleo took a deep breath and stared up at the sky. It was heavily clouded, looking about to rain. Then again, Mikleo had seen other reasons for dark clouds to accumulate. He remembered the dragon of the Glaivend Basin and shuddered. He continued forward, letting his thoughts fall there.

"Are you feeling okay?" he asked, sparing a glance to his friend. The wolves had mostly left them alone when they crossed the thickness of the forest, and he couldn't sense a speck of malevolence in Dezel (something he was thankful for) but it still felt right to ask him. It was also a way of confirming that Mikleo hadn't yet lost touch with his who he was, wasn't yet the mindless reptile he was turning into.

After some continued silence, Mikleo, once again lost in thought, muttered, "I hope I can be helped." It was still hard to believe he could be helped by someone who wasn't a shepherd and who supposedly wasn't backed by seraphim in a pact. But it wasn't like he had another choice other than to stagnate on the beach. The biggest downside to returning to the city was the risk of spreading the malevolence. "I...also hope coming back to the city is a good idea," Mikleo added. He hung his head. ”All things considered, it’s...worth it. Right?”

Second Dust

How was he supposed to take it? He wanted to question, feeling the mix of rage and guilt twist in his gut tighter and tighter until it was hard to breathe. One step at a time. He told himself as they began their walk back to the city. A friend of a friend who could help. He reminded himself with every step and every moment he was tempted to ask if Mikleo was ready to head back to the city, back toward people. Somehow Dezel remained placid on the outside, maybe because throwing a temper-tantrum wouldn't help anyone, or maybe simply because he was unsure how to react. If there were any gods in Avalon....he hoped they might buy them more time at the very least...

It was not difficult to tell, maybe because Mikleo moved differently, when the wind pushed against him even when it wasn't Dezel's command to do so. Mikleo was heavier, his shoulders had sunk a little, his voice sounded a little raspier. He wondered if maybe this was just thanks to his acute hearing or if it was so obvious. Mikleo had told him everything, but maybe in doing so it had made what he already knew much more real. Now they were heading back toward the city which was (as far as Dezel was concerned) the source of malevolence. But why did he not feel it? Beyond the usual. Why did he not suffer from it? Why...

His eyes blinked once or twice as if pulling himself from his thought as he heard Mikleo's voice call over to him. “Yeah, I'm fine.” he replied. Though he halfheartedly wondered if he was. As fine as he could be. His own throat begins to feel dry when Mikleo speaks again. What could he really say? 'everything is going to be okay' out loud sounded like an oblivious child's mantra on repeat.

He looks over again while chewing the inside of his lip. “Hang in there...” he replied finally before turning his attention forward again. “Maybe we can meet these people outside the city somewhere...maybe that wouldn't be a bad idea?” he shrugged one shoulder and swallowed dryly. “Yeah.....just ...hang in there.. I wouldn't want to have to drag you there...” he replied trying to find some humor in it but failed to do so and his gaze drifted away again.

Mikleo

The essence of those words set in: ‘they have to meet you outside, like an animal’. Mikleo shook his head, as if both denying and shaking them off. It could have been his malevolence toying with the way he perceived words. Not even inside of him stayed any safer than the outside of him now.

But Dezel was right. To avoid any further damage he shouldn't have to stray any closer than he needed to. “Okay,” he nodded. “We'll meet them outside the city.”

(The attempt at humor had completely flown over his head.)

“So, what do you think about this Lunafreya person? When Prompto talked about her, he didn't seem to indicate that she was anything like a shepherd. More like...a saint. Do you really think she’ll…?”

Mikleo lowered his shoulders with a sigh. He knew he had to think more positive, but he just couldn't. He was no Sorey.

”I guess I'm wondering what'll happen should the plan fail.”

Second Dust

'Hmm.' Dezel breathed softly through his nose and continued his pace forward, hands at his sides, his fingers occasionally curling inward tightly. As if trying to keep a cork on his thoughts and own feelings. The last thing he wanted to do was add to Mikleo's problem, or begin getting corrupted too. Though that thought only led to another and more questioning as to why he hadn't.... Why was he so special? Mikleo was the smart one, friendly one, the one who.....actually mattered.

His eyes drifted Mikleo's direction again as he spoke of this saint-woman and Prompto. Lunafreya, Dezel corrected himself and folded his arms across his chest while in thought. “I don't think Prompto is the type to want to mess with us, dunno anything about her but all we can do is hope she can do something.” he had to hope....at this point he'd beg if it meant helping.

Dezel chewed into the inside of his bottom lip and closed his eyes behind his hair, mostly to keep from narrowing them. Otherwise he forced himself to keep a straight face. It was normal for Mikleo to wonder such a thing, at least this was what Dezel was fairly sure of, and yet it didn't really offer him much comfort. Not really any at all....when he wanted to say it would be fine...

“Then we'll come up with another plan.” Dezel hoped he had disguised the bitterness in his voice enough when he spoke. “Just continue until something works...because something's got to.” he explained with a small wave of his hand before resting them on his hips and breathing in deeply. He wished his words brought any comfort.... But then again since when did words ever really do any good? Especially his own...he'd already failed to protect the others he had considered friends in the past...

Now it was Mikleo's turn....

Sorry this is short

Mikleo

Mikleo found it in himself to smile. Someone among them needed to be optimistic. "Well. We've come this far. I'll just have to believe in that." Mikleo nodded. He kept silent the rest of the way, walking with his head up. There was no more need for words now. Just results. The city's jagged edges were poking out of the horizon; it wouldn't take long to arrive now.

Mikleo took out his phone, ignoring that it was at critical battery power. He thumbed, "We'll be arriving soon," and hit send, before repocketing the device.

--

Mikleo's steps slowed when he reached the Vorick outskirts. Even from here, he could sense how the malevolence clung to the city like a heavy cloud. He didn't recall it being this concentrated when he'd left. He figured that he was just hyper-sensitive to it now.

As he stood there gauging the external Malevolence, he caught a strangely pleasant and hypnotic scent. Mikleo's eyes drifted closed as he sniffed around for the source, his steps swaying towards it, sniffing at the air. He abruptly bumped into Dezel. “Oh! Sorry, Dezel. There's this weird sme...ll...”

Mikleo gaped when he realized that the scent was coming from his friend. He jerked away in horror, clamping a hand over his mouth. He could feel his mouth salivating in anticipation, his fangs lengthening and scraping at his inner cheeks.

“Oh, Dezel, you're starting to smell good,” he murmured, backing away. “you're starting to smell really good...”

His first thought was to run. Just go as far away fron Dezel as his feet could carry him. Even if he pushed forward into the city and risked tainting innocent lives, it was a small price to pay when it meant keeping Dezel - the only remnant of Glenwood he had - safe.

Second Dust

“Yeah...just try anything once, I think that is what they say.” he waved a hand before rolling his shoulders and cracking his neck. He had to keep himself moving, motivated, and do his best to lift his spirits as well as Mikleos. He shifted the wind again feeling no nearby threats did come as a small comfort. He only wished it could bring him thoughts and words he could use.

So he hummed.....the first thing to come to mind... an old folk song.

--------

As they got closer to Vorick town he could feel the difference in energy and stifled back a scowl. 'It'll be okay...' he chewed the inside of his lip. Just where to go from here if it didn't work? He hadn't met anyone with any healing or purifying abilities, and frankly he was gad the both of them had met Prompto, but Mikleo had stayed in contact better than he was able to. He prayed silently that this friend could be helpful.

Bump. Dezel shifted a bit, blinking once or twice and craning his head to look at Mikleo with a raised brow. “You alright?” he questioned, though immediately realized how stupid the question was. Though he'd meant it by wondering if he could walk or had tripped into him. Though when Mikleo commented on a weird smell the wind-seraph tipped his head the other direction curiously and squinted as he sniffed the air once or twice. It was really strange if he didn't smell anything, considering he was the first to usually hear or smell things before anyone else could.

Mikleo then jerked back suddenly which had caught him a little off guard. Turning to better face the water-seraph Dezel slowly reached out. “Hey?!” he called back before pausing and his features were overcome with a look of surprise mixed with some worry. What? He wished the circumstances could have been different, he could have teased him, and that all of this was just some silly joke.... If only...

“What-- wait calm down.” he brought his hands up in a surrender-like fashion. This wasn't happening, right!? Not now, they were so close!! He swallowed hard and tried to think quickly. “Call your friend!” he barked, more like an order than anything else. “Tell them to get their a**es out here!” he shook his head roughly before looking away. He wasn't afraid of him or at least he didn't look it. Though maybe it would help... the wind Seraph moved a little ways down wind and then manipulated the wind against him. “Look at me...” he squared himself up hands at his side. “Hang in there, just a little longer Mikleo......Don't you dare give up.”

Sorry for the wait

By manipulating the wind, Dezel could definitely subdue his scent. But he couldn't subdue the idea already planted in Mikleo's head. The half-seraph shook his head to rid himself of the thought of sinking his teeth into skin, and turned away to pound the letters into Prompto's text box.

Some complications came up.

The meeting is going to take place at the northern gate outside of Vorick.

Please hurry.

The more he typed, the longer his nails became until they were tapping the screen instead of his fingerpads. Mikleo hunched over his phone, groaning in pain as the extensions on his back grew out and tore through the fabric. He didn't realized he'd crushed his phone in his palms until he unclasped his fingers and the remnants the phone fell to the ground.

Once the growing pains subsided, the process leaving him thoroughly exhausted and disoriented, he stared miserably at the white, pearlescent wings sprawled on either side of his body. Mikleo didn’t dare look Dezel’s way. When his breaths evened out, he picked himself up and stared desperately at the town gate.

Hurry.
