As unfortunate it could be, the world happened to revolve a helluva lot around money which, even more unfortunately, did not just grow out of one's sheer will. Nor could it all be gambled for. Make no mistake, Jacob had been managing, but... life was a little lackluster with no action and consistent routines. He loathed both, so an ad in the paper asking for those of able enough body and mind to defend a few workers from whatever might lurk in the wilds while they continued the rail line?

Why, that was right up his alley! Throw in the provided shelter and food and what reason had he to say no, right? Stimulation and pay! Just what he needed right about now. As much as he loved a good, strong drink, the enjoyment of such activities was quite dampened when it was just something to get out of staring at his walls and maybe slipping into using them for target practice with his throwing knives. And Henry had the whole shop thing going on, which was all fine and dandy, but it was no big secret that such things were not within Jacob's tastes.

"Mister Frye!" one of the workers came to greet him and Jacob accepted the somewhat timid handshake, "Seems you're the first to arrive." The Assassin flashed a smile, "Figured you'd want to get started."

Well, suppose all there was to it for now was to wait for the rest of the group they'd hired to arrive. Most of the workers seemed to be occupied with getting themselves ready to head out, so Jacob turned to his collection of supplies to make sure everything was in order. He was pretty sure everything was, but it couldn't hurt to check since he had nothing better to do with his time, right? Leaning comfortably back against a stack of crates and propping a foot, he counted through his throwing knives, plucking one out to leisurely toy with in the meantime. Hopefully this would be at least somewhat interesting. Pay was all well and good, but he needed something to do just as much as he needed the pay.

The words 'might fight monsters' was enough to seal the deal that he was going to go on this 'mission' no matter what. First off, it was doing a good deed...functionally. Second off, he was going to get paid, free transport was a pretty sweet deal if he said so himself, and third off, it gained more recognition. Every bit counted to let Avalon at large know that the Guardians of the Galaxy could be counted and called upon. Plus, if he were being entirely honest with himself, a bit of time away from things maybe just battling things that wanted to eat-slash-kill him was a good way for him to mentally sort out more than a few issues. So he'd told Sarah that he might be gone for a week or so - of course she'd be fine, she was his girl, she'd be fine (wouldn't stop him from worrying a little bit about her anyway, but that was the thing he had to do as an adoptive father, he supposed). He was told that there'd be two other guys working in unison with him, at least, which was a bit of a help....depending upon who they were. Rocket could only hope that they wouldn't be holding him back, in a sense - apparently they were probably letting anyone sign up just with the warning that 'ps: you might fight some things', which is....annoying, but he could make up for shortcomings. That's just what a genius does.

Though walking in, a small bag over his shoulder, he grinned at the first familiar person he noticed here. "Jacob! Hey, man!" He raised a hand in greeting, walking over, glancing at the workers who were preparing to pack up. No activity yet. But hey, he hadn't missed anything, good. "You took this job too? ...Honestly, I'm kinda relieved. Amateur hour was not somethin' I was prepared to deal with for a week, so you 'n me and the other guy can handle this no sweat." It really was a relief that one of his partners was someone he knew - Jacob Frye was someone he was familiar with thanks to a night of shenanigans with him and Quill, and honestly he'd fit into the mold of all their usual dynamics no sweat, enough for Rocket to end the night genuinely thinking that they were friends. Which was honestly something that meant a lot on Rocket standards. "...He show up yet? Or she, I guess, either or, they ain't here yet?"

Honestly? He half-expected Quill to show up, and then they'd really have a party going again. A week spent with Jacob and Quill hanging out, camping, and killing monsters if so need while getting paid for it at the end? That honestly sounded like it could be one of the best weeks of Rocket's life, bar none. Then again, that would somewhat defeat the purpose of this in the first place....which was oh no, emotions. Let me run away from those posthaste. At least for a week. He wouldn't mind if that were the case entirely, but....

Still, it could easily be someone completely different. Which could be bad or good. Rocket was getting weirdly more social since he arrived, and it was safe to say he was actually building up a small circle of....of friends. It was almost terrifying. Groot would be aghast (and probably start messing with him immediately: hidden behind an faux-horrified sounding 'I am Groot' would be My little Rocket is out there making friends? Gasp. I must have missed Hell freezing over. Does Satan have a nice winter coat yet? because ha ha ha, his best friend was a bit of an asshole sometimes too - though nowadays it'd probably just be more blatant excitement and demands to be introduced, because he was still a baby), honestly. But hey. It was a good thing, right? Right! Probably!

"At any rate, hope this's actually excitin'. Or we might have to liven it up some way ourselves." He joked, shrugging. "We'll find a way."

((Wasn't sure what time it was, so I figured morning. If not lemme know and I'll change it :3 ))

He'd spent enough time wandering around. Now was the time for him to get started on something important, like helping people. It just happened to be what he was good at, so it seemed like something that he could do without getting into too much trouble. Then again, this wasn't his team, and therefore anything could happen. Heck, anything had happened when he was with his team, so this could just be a total disaster. Too late to back out now even if he did see a good reason for it, so here he was.

Well, if worst came to worst he could just hang out by himself for most of the trip, right? He spent enough time doing that anyway.

At least this was the sort of job he was well prepared for, considering how much time he'd spent protecting people up to this point. Surely this would be easy enough. At least, he thought it would be until he got there and saw another man and... a talking raccoon? Well, now he'd seen it all. Granted, he wasn't too surprised since he'd seen quite a bit on his journey through space, but a talking Earth animal was another thing entirely.

Just roll with it Shiro, he told himself as he approached the group, taking in their surroundings and the people they were presumably going to be guarding. He'd seen plenty of strange creatures in his time here on Avalon, so he knew full well that they probably needed this protection. Heck, he'd run into a legit lion before! He doubted he'd run into such a being here, but stranger things had happened.

"Morning, everyone," he said, offering a slight smile as he joined them. "This seems like a good set-up you have here. I'm Shiro, by the way." It was still somewhat weird having to introduce himself, but he preferred it to everyone knowing who he was because he was the Champion or because they had looked up to him for so many years. Both of those situations made him uncomfortable, and now he was clear of them both. Still, he'd take having the second situation again if it meant his team was there. He missed them terribly. Maybe this was the start of a new team... though he'd reserve that judgement for when he got to see everyone in action. If they couldn't even work together, this was going to be a very long trip.

Possibly for the best, he wasn't left to entertain himself for long and he couldn't help but grin at the approach of a familiar face. "Rocket!" He stashed away the throwing knife he'd been playing with and briefly threw up a hand to return the greeting. "A proper adventure seemed to be in order," he said, a bit of a devilishly playful glint coming to his eyes and twisting his lips further. "I don't take being idle very well." And now a familiar face was in for the fun as well!

This really couldn't have worked out better, could it? Well, that was probably a bit presumptuous since they had yet to actually deal with their mission at hand, but so far, so good!

"Not yet," he confirmed with a nod. "Just waiting for them and the workers to say they're ready."

Ah, see, that was what had made this friendship so easy! It had been a bit odd, but Avalon apparently didn't shy away at all from such things and it was hardly harmful, so why dwell on it, right? What a far cry they were from Crawley now, though, right?

He was about to agree with Rocket when he spotted the approach of another stranger that didn't appear to be one of the workers. "I'd believe that's them now," he offered with a slight nudge to his friend.

He gave a nod of greeting to the newcomer. "Jacob Frye." And looks could be deceiving, but it seemed they had a capable group.

So far, so good!

It was still a nice feeling to have someone legitimately excited to see him. It was a dumb thing to be excited about, he knew, but it still meant a lot to him in a sense - it always had ever since he'd started making friends by hanging out with the GOTG, and it continued to now when he was now friends with others - including Jacob, who he genuinely liked being around, so this was shaping up to be good times already. Even if it probably meant that this rail-protection idea was going to be probably less cold and calculated, more like one of those times Groot and he made little games out of killing enemies (and he always won, of course, even if Groot said otherwise). but that wasn't a bad thing at all. Jacob had remarked that the other person wasn't around yet - up until he showed himself.

It was pretty obvious who was their companion, honestly. The guy looked like he'd fit right in with the Nova Corps by demeanor alone, and for what it was worth the getup he had on seemed...vaguely space-like. The guy introduced himself as Shiro, and Jacob introduced himself. "Rocket Raccoon." Rocket said, by way of introduction. So much as previously he'd go on and on about 'no, I'm not a raccoon'....that was the easiest way to put things. And stopped the other mistaken nicknames. 'Triangle-Faced Monkey, 'Grumpy Puppy', bleh.

.... Part of him was mildly disappointed it wasn't who he expected, but ah well.

"So, if we're lucky, we're in for a pretty decent adventure. Gotta ask...Shiro, was it? You from space back whee you came from, too?" If he was alternate-dimension Nova Corps, that was a sure sign he was at least trained...though Rocket never personally trusted himself to team up with...or at least lead that force again. Not after he had to listen to Saal dying over speaker, and that was on his conscience. "If that's the case...then man, Jacob, you're the odd one out." He snickered. Two from space, and one from Terra...or, well, this guy could easily be a Terran who was abducted, like Quill, but he seemed too composed, honestly. This was all spitballing, though - no idea for certain.

He peered down the tracks. Hm. Not yet. But probably soon. With that, he took out a relatively big gun from the bag he'd brought, smirking. The Hadron Enforcer. A bit high-grade, but he'd designed it himself and he was proud of it.

Shiro nodded politely as they introduced themselves, making note of their names. He was somewhat surprised that the raccoon-like creature actually had the last name Raccoon... but he'd seen weirder things in his life and he wasn't about to judge. Obviously he was a smart little guy given how fast he zeroed in on the notion that Shiro wasn't exactly from planet-side.

"Ah, well actually I was originally from Earth but I did end up traveling through space, yes," he confirmed, feeling only slightly strange about answering the question but determined not to show it. It was certainly the simple way to answer it, but these two definitely didn't need to know the whole story just yet. "It's that obvious huh?" he asked, even as he realized his Paladin armor probably looked a bit too sci-fi to be anything other than from space.

At least Rocket was visibly well armed, though Shiro found himself a bit concerned by how willing he was to draw his weapon. Couldn't be too safe though, he supposed, and it wasn't as though he personally had a choice about putting his weapon away considering the damn thing was attached to him. He wondered what sort of weaponry the other man had, but he wasn't going to ask. He was sure he'd figure it out sooner or later, because there was no way this trip was going to be entirely uneventful. He could hope that it would be all he wanted to, but he knew better. They wouldn't be asking for an escort if they thought they weren't going to be needed, that was for sure. No one would spend that kind of money if they could save it.

"You think any of these people know how to fight too, or are they all going to need to be protected?" he asked, pitching his voice slightly lower so hopefully anyone passing by wouldn't overhear and be offended. He wouldn't mind if they didn't have a clue, but he'd like to know that up front so he'd know what to expect when the time came.

He gave a bit of an indignant huff at Rocket's comment, eyes narrowing slightly at him as he folded his arms across his chest, but a smirk quickly followed and shot whatever seriousness may have ever been in the actions right out of the window. "Ass," he muttered. Just for good measure.

Not that he meant it and the amusement in his eyes would give it away to just about anyone. But he shortly turned his attention back to Shiro as he answered the proffered question.

He had friends from space now... And to think he'd just been excited to get the hell out of Crawley. Much had certainly changed since then, even if you didn't count this whole Avalon deal.

Hell, he was almost old-fashioned in weaponry compared to these two, wasn't he? All well enough by him though. He knew his blade wouldn't fail him and... why, it would just keep things interesting, wouldn't it?

He glanced back towards the preparing workers at Shiro's question, the faintest hints of a frown briefly ghosting at the corners of his mouth as he gave a slight shake of his head. "I wouldn't count on any of them knowing much," he offered. Their jobs were, after all, working on the rails. "If they thought they could handle it, there'd be no need to hire anybody to come along." Which was a sentiment they all probably already knew.

Rocket let out a small snicker at Jacob's reaction, a grin on his face. Yeah, he was naturally an ass, but he could see the amusement in his friend's eyes, and it wasn't as if he hadn't been called worse. 'A-hole' was basically an affectionate term amongst all of the Guardians at this point. Which was perfectly fine with him. Shiro responded that yep, he was right on the space assessment - originally a Terran, but ended up travelling through space. Right, made sense, though the general assumption had to be that it was probably more willingly than Quill's case.

"Just a bit." Rocket remarked. "No big deal, though. It's something in common, at least." Shiro peered down the tracks and asked if any of them might know how to fight, and Jacob responded that it wasn't likely. "What I'm afraid of is that some of them might think they know how to fight, because there's always one-or-two on missions like this ,I've found. Back where I came from, if my team and I ended up on an inhabited planet, there were always a few that thought they were more capable than they actually were. That's why we've gotta be on the ball." Those were usually the ones that didn't make it, in worst cases. But there was always the effort made to save them....just sometimes it wasn't enough.

"But I think we can handle that. It'd be nothing for the Guardians of the Galaxy, it's nothin' for us." He smirked. "I'm honestly itching for something interesting to happen while we're rout here. It's been way too long since I've had a good battle, and it's honestly giving me weird feelings. Domestic life ain't my style." He shuddered. Everything seemed normal.

And then there was a rustle. A hiss. Rocket's ears twitched. "Speak of the devil. We might just have company." He cocked his gun, keeping an eye out.

"Showtime, a-holes."

Ha, willingly, if Rocket only knew. That would have been an interesting conversation. They weren't going to have it though, because thankfully it wasn't a comment that Rocket had actually made. At least the subject was dropped and Shiro could relax a minuscule amount, though he didn't show it.

He too knew all too well how people could think they knew what they were doing, except they didn't. Even the first planet they'd gone to housed a group of people who were obviously at least in part warriors... but when they only came up to one's knee if that one couldn't take them as seriously. Too bad their village had been wiped out by the Galra. That had definitely proved they couldn't protect themselves, and in the worst possible way. He sincerely hoped something like that didn't happen this time too.

"Yeah, we'll have to keep an eye on things," he agreed. If he could just talk to these people, get a feel for them all and see who felt disgruntled that they were there, that would probably put them more on top of things. Unfortunately, they didn't have time for that.

His hearing definitely wasn't as good as Rocket's, and so when the raccoon announced they had company he had to look around for a moment to figure out what he was talking about. He had to settle for just looking in the same general direction. Not for the first time, he wished Pidge was here. She'd have some sort of device that could scan the area, or they could use Rover to do it if she could rebuild him. Something that would give them an eye in the sky, so to speak.

His eyes narrowed briefly in thought at Rocket's assessment of the other worry they might have with the group. It was a fair point, and usually always a dangerous one. Misguided and blind faith could end in nothing short of disaster - in one's self, in an order, in... Well, anything, really. As much as he loved to devilishly smirk and claim he learned to run before he walked, there was progression. Out in the real world, there was far worse consequences than a harsh wack up alongside the head from one of father's books, after all. Even he knew that.

He flashed a grin at his friend's sentiment about some real action. "Seconded." He thrived on a good challenge, did he not? How did you learn if there wasn't a challenge, yes?

Rocket sounded an alarm for company and Jacob was quick to turn to his Eagle Vision, following the others' line of sight and reaching under his jacket for his pistol, though his fingers just brushed over it for the time being. He was really itching for his blade, but there was three of them against whatever this creature may be.

He glanced at the other two with a smile, "Shall we make this interesting?" With a flick of his wrist, he released his hidden blade and took a few steps back, still mindful of the location of their first enemy, "Circle around?"
